For my website Dancersplanet.com I have done many interviews with great dancers and World Champions. In the interviews they always mention that having fun is the most important thing that mathers.
If you watch major competition live or on the television you can see proof of this. When I see Luca and Loraine Baricchi dancing, I see enjoyment. They really like to dance. That is probably the reason why they have decided to enter their competitive career. They may have not enjoyed the competitions anymore.
We all started dancing because we wanted to do something to enjoy, to meet people and to move our body. Sometimes I wonder, when I am watching competitive dancers, if they still enjoy the dancing. When I was still competiting I really enjoyed particing, but the competitions were not that attracting anymore. That is also one of the reasons that we have decided to stop competing, along with the birth of our beautiful daughter.
Now we are dancing again, but no competitions. The fun is back and the dancing is going much better. The pressure of having to proof yourself in competition is gone, and now we dance like never before.
I believe it is the duty of trainers and coaches to keep their couples enthousiastic about dancing. Do not only train them to become the next World Champion, train them to have fun and to relax when they are dancing. In the past I have had teachers who didn't give me this feeling. Our results were influenced by this. Nowadays we have teachers who give us back the full enjoyment of dancing. Dancing has to feel right.
Think about this very hard. There is more to dancing then practising steps and technique all the time. Have fun.
